Coffey Modica O’Meara Capowski LLP (CMOC), a national insurance defense law firm, held its first Women in Insurance Luncheon of 2022, on Tuesday, April 5th, at Mulino’s of Westchester. The luncheon was attended by seven of the firm’s attorneys.

This monthly luncheon series is a brainchild of Managing Partner Juliann O’Meara and Appellate Partner Sofya Uvaydov, to connect with female clients and colleagues and to exchange ideas in an informal setting.

“While tides are changing, insurance and law are two industry sectors still dominated by men,” shared Juliann, “hence we felt that creating a forum for women to discuss challenges, solutions, achievements, etc. was crucial to our success. Women don’t always have mentors, and with these Women in Insurance lunches and other similar programs, we are striving to change that.”

The luncheon included a lively discussion about the tips and tricks to navigate the practice of law, specifically at CMOC, where high-exposure, catastrophic cases are commonplace.

While CMOC attorneys comprised Tuesday’s guest list, the one held at the end of last year included attorneys and firm clients. “We would like to keep these lunches relatively small, at least for the time being, so the guest lists each month will change,” shared Sofya. “We will adjust as we see fit to meet the needs of our clients and our team.”

Diversity, equity and inclusion are central to CMOC’s culture. With an attorney roster of nearly 30, the firm is proud to have women in leadership roles including a managing partner and senior appellate partner, and nearly equal representation of men and women throughout its ranks.
